New Years - Where Were YOU?
At the Lighthouse Inn, on New Years Eve (Dec 31, 2000) jazz enthusiasts were treated to a New Year's evening by
the Dick Watson Trio. Playing a program of classic jazz, this group was joined by two young artists, Willie
Fastenow on saxophone and Coulter Wood, singer. Fastenow
who's tone is rich and clear, played compelling improvisations to the basic sound of the trio. He has great control
of the instrument and an inventive style. He does not rely on old patterns and easy sequences. Wood's singing
sent the message of standards that were before his time, interpersed with some terrific scat singing. These two
artists crossed the generations with their interpretations backed up a solid clean sound from the trio. How fortunate
they were to have this group provide them with a venue of clear beat, clean sound and improvisation. The trio
is excting by itself as the members are collectively as well as individually fine musicians. Well worth coming
to hear! Those of us there experienced something very special that night. We felt lucky!
